The Inn, built in 1836 by Dr. Bryan Bedingfield, who was the first physician in Stewart County. It served as a family residence as well as an inn for weary stagecoach passengers and other travelers.
At the request of local historians BBGT was invited to investigate the historic inn. BBGT arrived on the evening of the appointed date and
were met by members of the historical society who hosted a delicious evening meal at a local eatery. After the meal we arrived at the inn and were given the grand tour.
After much conversation and tour of the inn BBGT begin to establish baseline data and position tri pods and video cameras along with there monitors in prominent locations where paranormal activity had been witnessed. This night would be the counties coldest night of the winter with record breaking temperatures with only a fireplace on the first floor to keep us warm with temperatures rapidly dropping down to a single digit the night’s investigation got under way.
With BBGT members positioned in various rooms on the upper floor of this massive mansion utilizing the “tools of the trade” mediating an attempting to channel into the “other side” the night’s ghostly encounters would begin.
An antique rocking chair would be witnessed by 2 members of the BBGT team rocking on it’s on; as the rocking begin the rooms temperature would drop from a cold 43 to an even colder 32 degrees. With these temperatures dutifully noted and recorded the BBGT member moved on to another of the many rooms that would need investigated. With an unexplained sound here and there plus the distinct scent of pipe smoke along with the unidentifiable smell of possibly an elixir (medication) the night was becoming quiet eventful as the 1 a.m. hour was approaching BUT….more intense and at times frightful events would be in store for us as we returned to the first floor and the warmth of the roaring fireplace.
The BBGT team continued the night’s investigation on the first floor to include
Dr. Bedingfield’s office and the summer kitchen areas. After two hours with very little to none activity occurring and the bewitching hour of 3 a.m. upon us the team decided to bunk down for the remainder of the night in front of the fireplace. However it was soon apparent that little rest would be happening!! As the quietness of the night set in and accounting for the normal sounds that old homes seem to make this old inn begin to seemingly take on a life of it’s on. At first it was the footsteps on the hardwood floor above us…..then it was the sound in the adjunct room of a dinning chair being pulled out from its place at the dining table shortly thereafter the creaking door to Dr. Bedingfield’s office was heard slowly opening. As the team sit up in there sleeping bags with the dismay looks of disbelief WE HEARD IT……..the sound of SOMETHING being dragged down the long hall above us headed toward the staircase NEAR us! As the sound got to the foyer staircase it abruptly stopped. Then followed by the sound of what sounded like marbles to us was heard being rolled down the hallway. This would continue for most of the remainder of the night at various intervals.
When the sun begin to rise in the east and the long exciting night turned into day we all KNEW without a shadow of a doubt we had experienced and witness a haunting!!
Our conclusion: The Bedingfield Inn is indeed HAUNTED!!
