Oakland Cemetery
Bronough Street
Tallahassee, Florida
Oakland is the final resting-place of many of the city founding fathers and most colorful citizens. The oldest graves date back to the mid 1800's and the latest 1998. The moss-covered cemetery even in the daytime has an eerie air about it and at night it seems to take on an even more ominous atmosphere. One of the most prominent and impressive graves is that of Calvin C. Phillips, one of the cities most eccentric characters. His mausoleum is a twenty-foot-high structure topped with a minaret. Once his tomb was completed, he had a coffin taken inside and literally crept into his crypt and died. It has been reported that Mr. Phillips can be seen on a full moonlit night sitting on top of his massive tomb. Others report having a unnerving feeling when near the tomb even in the mid day sunshine.
